I grew up on the East Coast in Maryland and this time of year is when I’m feeling nostalgic for my hometown. There’s nothing like autumn on the East Coast; visiting apple orchards and pumpkin patches, drinking fresh apple cider and of course, the foliage. I remember doing all that at Butler’s Orchard and getting cider from Cider Barrel, which was in a building shaped like, you guessed it, a giant wooden barrel. (Unfortunately, it’s closed now). Autumn in Los Angeles is not quite the same thing. First of all, it’s the end of October and there’s been a long string of 100 degree days (seriously, it has been SO HOT). Second, you’re more likely to see palm trees than the deciduous trees that turn beautiful shades of red, orange and yellow.

I still wanted to try to experience the autumn of my childhood, so I researched if there were even any apple orchards or pumpkin patches near LA. A lot of the pumpkin patches I found are what I call parking lot pumpkin patches, where they take over a parking lot and set up the pumpkins for you to select. But through my online research, I found a town called Oak Glen filled with apple orchards about a 90 minute drive from the city!

hanhgry.com | celestial retrolicious dress at Griffith Observatory

outfit: going bats with the Glow in the Dark Moon dress from Retrolicious

hanhgry.com | celestial retrolicious dress at Griffith Observatory, looking through telescopeContinuing with my Halloween-themed outfits, today’s outfit is not explicitly Halloween (no candy corn, pumpkins or witches). But it does have a dark and kind of spooky print of the lunar cycle, with various phases of the moon on the dress. This is the Glow in the Dark Moon dress from Retrolicious and I got it at their sample sale earlier this year. I love the dresses from Retrolicious, and have worn a few so far this year (including this colorful rainbow dress!). I added some cute bat-shaped collar clips from Femme de Bloom because this big white collar was like a blank canvas to me; it needed to be accessorized!

I wore this dress for the first time during the eclipse in September, which was my way of participating in the eclipse craziness since Southern California didn’t get a great view of the event. I don’t like wearing something just once, so I thought it would also be great for Halloween (or “frocktober”). And to go with the celestial theme, I took these photos at Griffith Observatory in Los Angeles.

hanhgry.com | color factory sitting in the confetti room

outfit post: color factory & rainbows galore

hanhgry.com | color factory sitting in confetti roomColor Factory is the creation of the blogger Jordan Ferney from Oh Happy Day. I’ve followed her blog and Instagram for a while, and when she announced this new project, I was so excited to see it! I bought tickets right when it was announced, and surprisingly there were a lot of available dates/time slots available. I think I lucked out because a few days after I got my tickets, the news of Color Factory got out and they sold out of the rest of their tickets.

Ross and I made a weekend of it, since we love going to San Francisco. We tried a couple new restaurants as well (another post on that later) before heading off to Color Factory!

outfit: it’s beginning to look a lot like a retrolicious Christmas

I really enjoy Christmas, despite not being religious at all. I actually grew up in a Buddhist family, but we celebrated Christmas because it was the “American” thing to do. My parents would put up a fake Christmas tree and hang lights and garlands on the front of our house. One of my favorite childhood memories comes from the year my mom and I had a craft day and made a bunch of felt ornaments and used paint pens to decorate blank glass bulb ornaments for the tree. My mom still puts those DIY ornaments on the tree (they must be about 20 years old at this point).

It feels a little weird to me to celebrate Christmas in an area that is so warm all year round. Even after living in Los Angeles for over six years, I still expect cold and snow around Christmas time. Oh well, I’ll make myself a frozen hot chocolate instead and just think minty, snowy thoughts.

Ross took these photos of me at Pasadena City Hall, where they have a giant Christmas tree display in the rotunda. Pasadena City Hall is a gorgeous building with a beautiful courtyard with rose bushes. It’s a very popular place for wedding/engagement photoshoots. I work nearby and sometimes take a nice stroll on the grounds during my lunch break, and I’m pretty sure I’ve accidentally ended up in some wedding party photos. It was also used as the city hall for Pawnee in the tv show Parks and Rec.

The dress is from the brand Retrolicious, which is known for novelty prints and retro-inspired designs. I went to the Retrolicious sample sale this past weekend (you can see my haul on my Instagram) and was determined to get some Christmas/holiday-themed dresses. The dresses were around $40 (and they normally are $80-$100) so I couldn’t resist. I have a few other Christmas dresses from the Retrolicious sale that will be featured soon on the blog.

This particular dress is light pink with a whimsical Christmas candy print- candy canes, ribbon candy, peppermint swirls, gumdrops, lollipops, and more. I thought it was adorable, especially with the heart cut-out on the back. I paired it with a mint sweater and my favorite pink oxfords. Yes, even in a season known for rich, deep jewel tones, I still wear pastels!
